Home Cooked Meal Day 3 - Dinner Dishes

After the soup, my mum took out a gigantic seacucumber , sorry no pic, forgotten to snap one or two. It is huge - at least 1 1/2 feet by 3 inches in diameter that my brother brought back from his trip to Borneo. Fresh pulak too err... i meant frozen not dried thus the word fresh. I didnt even know it was in the same family as Sea Urchin.

More about seacucumber here.

Normally, we see the dried sea cucumber which needs to be soaked for hours before cooking. This time round, just thaw and cut them up. Mum used 2 types of sea cucumber, the frozen and dried for texture purpose. I had this a few times but it is kinda rare in Peninsular but abundant in Sabah. This is the white species....dunno what they are called otherwise.

Cooking method - what else but braised. Pork ribs, whole fresh black mushroom, garlic , chinese rice wine and oyster sauce of course you must season lar....

here's how it looks like after cooking. Kinda oily though.

Note the 2 different seacucumber ? The thicker type is the frozen one and the dried type seems to like melted away. Theo ne on the spoon is the dried type.

Next on line will be the Angle Loofah Gourd or spelt as luffa or better known Petola back in Malaysia.

Simple dish of just slice loofa with prawn and garlic. Slice off the skin of the Petola. Cut into halves and deseed, Slice to whatever shape u like. I like mine simple. Prawn, peeled and deveined. Sauteed garlic, add in prawn and then petola. Add a lil water and cover for 1 minute under intense heat. Season and stir to mix well and serve.

Since after his bypass, dad starts to love eating fish. Before that, he hardly eats them or he's choosy over type of fish. They bought some juvenile MarbleGoby which we steam, fresh fish sure must steam what. Errr.. do i sounds Malaysian now ? lolz. I called them juvenile as i am so used to seeing sizes of like 3kg and above in hotels where i worked. The fishes that mum bought was like around 600gm - 800gm, aint that juvenile ?

Steamed with slice ginger, some plum and Tau Chu. One fish each and it was DELISH ! Nothing beats fresh food especially HOME COOKED MEAL by our own EXECUTIVE CHEF - all our mum, am i right ?

Fresh out from the steamer

Last but not least is this dish. Curried cuttlefish. Another simple dish. Cleaned squid, cutinto bite size, marinate with curry powder and a lil salt. Heat up wok for frying. Dump all marinated squid and stir fry till cook. Dats all.

This wil be the last posting for the current home cooked meal until my next day off. Will see what my MIL will cook the next time i'm back or what i will cook, if any....

*Chuckle* Thanx for dropping by and do enjoy the pic. Food long gone.

  6. Oooh...I love seacucumbers. Usually, I buy one huge, dried one and soak them for CNY. But these two years, they cost a bomb, like almost RM70-90 per cucumber. So, I sort of give up because I am the only one who enjoys it. Hoi see hoy sum fatt choy. Yumm....
