FooDcrazEE - cooks - sort off

Was reading about Mumu's acuriousmix about tea egg " char yip tan ".......and when my wife sort of slow cook her "Pat Chan" some kind of chinese herbs that I dont know what they called in English, I decided to put some egg into them and see what it will taste like.

Here's how they look like

Kinda blurry - sorry but the shell colour definitely looks like TEA EGG

Unlike tea egg - it doenst marble like what you see in MUMU's blog....hmm......must go ask and check out the reason..

The egg had a very herbal taste as they had absorb the flavour - place them in the slow cooker for more than 24 hours soaking in the herb concoction...

Definitely will try again next month when she boil the herb again...this time i will place the egg earlier as in starting point with the herb...hopefully it will marble and i can have a better picture.

Cheers!

  1. let me tell you the trick to made the autentic tea eggs.

After you have boil the eggs in your herbal soup for some time, you have to dish them out, and then manually crack the shell gently so that there are cracks but the shell is intact.

Then put back into the tea or in your case the patt chan (hello, not for man, or else nose breed) and boil for another hour before taking it out.

A better recipe would be to use the bak kut teh herb with black soya sauce.. when u boil your bak kut teh, make your tea leaf at the same time.

Hope u like my buddha jumps over the wall post at my blog.

  5. Yeah, I was about to say what robin suggested. Crack the egg manually after it hard-boiled. I don't like pat chan but I like the egg. :)

  8. I have tried Tea Eggs twice but don't really fancy it. I like the smell of it but the taste is quite bland, or perhaps I have not tasted the best yet?

  10. Yeah, I also thot abt the cracked egg bit. I'm sure you'll get perfect ones the next time.

By the way, another quick chef question for you - when cooking tomato sauce for spaghetti, does one use canned tomatoes or tomato puree? I see quite a few people use tomato puree but I always thot that makes it sour as I have always used canned tomatoes and a few tablespoons of puree only.
